History

Christ Church URC Rayleigh was One Hundred years old in 2010. it was founded as Rayleigh Congregatonal Church and became Christ Church United Reformed Church in 1972. A number of events were held throughout the centenary year to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Rev Hubert Smith’s book, Christ Church Rayleigh – the first 100 years’, was published in March 2010. It is an excellent read, and opens up the history to both ‘old hands’ and those who are not familiar with this church. It is still available for purchase, click the previous link.

Also included is Rayleigh Tabernacle by Reg Fletcher. This is a detailed article which looks specifically at the history of the church building before it became a Congregational Chapel in 1910.

The Centenary enabled us to gather some very interesting historic photographs of the past. These provide an interesting snapshot across the years. Another historic snapshot is the seven reminiscences by people connected with Christ Church (or Rayleigh Congregational Church) over the years.

Finally,  the Centenary Project was a series of opportunities to give thanks financially for our 100 years by supporting our partner church, Budiriro Uniting Presbyterian Church in Harare, Zimbabwe. This young congregation needs it’s own land and building. Around £9600 was raised and transferred to Zimbabawe.  The Centenary Celebration therefore wasn’t just for 2010 but with a new plot of land and eventually a new building in Zimbabwe, it’s effect will live on.
