Baptism

Baptism and Blessing

Baptism (sometimes known as Christening)

We're delighted you're thinking of baptism for your child. Your child is precious to you and precious to God. In baptism of babies or children, you as parents are thanking God for his gift of life, making a decision to start your child on the journey of faith and asking for the Church's support. In baptism you promise to raise your child to know God loves them

Baptism takes place at a church service, almost always at the Sunday 10am service. You are making promises on behalf of your child and the church promises in response to help support you. It is a time of celebration for you and your family and friends.

Blessing of Children (Thanksgiving)

Even if you are not a regular churchgoer, Christians believes that God's love is available to all, regardless of background. If you feel unable to commit yourself to bringing up a child in church, or you feel that your child should make its own decision for baptism at a later stage, you might prefer to have a Service of Blessing. In some ways this is similar to a baptism service, allowing for a happy occasion with friends and family, acknowledge God’s presence but the promises are more general and the baptismal font is not used.

Have a look first….

With baptism or blessing it is worthwhile coming to a Sunday church service where you may find out more about the Christian faith, and the welcome that can be given to you and your family. Our main service is Sunday at 10am.

There is no cost involved in a baptism or blessing, though a collection to cover the general church running expenses and work in the community takes place each worship service.

Baptism at a ‘responsible age’

At some stage in life a personal decision needs to be made on if you believe in God and choose to follow him in your daily life. Exploring the reality of God as revealed in Jesus and then committing your life to Him is the true meaning of being a Christian. If you are on a spiritual journey, Christ Church Rayleigh has various ways to support and encourage you. At some point you may feel that you are ready to make this life changing commitment. If you have already been baptised as a child, a public acknowledgment in a church service is involved. If not, baptism would be an exciting and essential part of your Christian journey, and can be either through the pouring of water from the baptism font or though full emersion.

If you are interested in exploring any of these options, please email our minister,
Rev David Rees, or call 01268 654900 and he will arrange a time to meet.
